Can music improve your fitness performance?

Lots of us love to pop in our earphones and listen to music whilst running or working out at the gym but, apart from blocking out the grunts and groans from other exercisers, does it actually do us and our performance any good?

Smile though your muscles are aching
According to research published in the journal Psychology of Sport and Exercise, music definitely helps us enjoy the exercise experience more. The results showed that there was a 28 per cent increase in enjoyment found in participants who listened to music compared with those with no ‘auditory stimuli’. This is likely to be because music is known to in-crease dopamine, a neurotransmitter that drives your brain’s reward system, and the feel-good hormone serotonin – a very mood-boosting combination!

Powered by pop?
The aforementioned study also showed that those exercising with music were ‘less aware of their exertion’.

Indeed, in an article by Costas Karageorghis of London’s Brunel University School of Sport and Education, he stated that music ‘can reduce the perception of effort significantly and increase endurance by as much as 15 per cent.’

Tuning out the pain
Strains, pains or a recent operation can make exercising difficult and your enthusiasm can easily wain. However, according to a study by McGill University, ‘music listening reportedly lowers requirements for opiate drugs in postoperative pain.’

Stress less with a soundtrack
A 2013 review published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences revealed that listening to music can reduce an exerciser’s levels of stress, which in turn keeps their immunity levels on an even keel.
