Step into Winter

With much of the country under strict Covid restrictions, it’s understandable that you may be confused as to what do to when it comes to making great memories and staying fit this festive season.

Walking is great for the body and soul and we have to remember, this country of ours can be a beautiful sight to behold during the winter months… and it’s something we can do safely.

We put the snow-capped spotlight on London, Manchester, Cardiff and Glasgow and searched for wondrous walks to brighten your frame of mind and improve your new year health…

When it comes to walks that take in beauty and history, London is one of the most exciting cities in the entire world. Time Out has put together a brilliant guide to the best Covid-safe walks the capital has to offer. From taking in sculptures, parks and famous landmarks, these walks will make you momentarily forget all the chaos and appreciate what a priceless, fascinating city you live in.

Lightopia is an absolutely glorious lantern and light festival taking place at Manchester’s Heaton Park until 10th January. Safe and socially distanced, this dramatic and unforgettable event is just the thing to make new memories (it’s Insta-glorious too) and wonder at beautiful art installations. Explore interactive exhibits, immersive light installations and the magical illuminated trail, and get that body moving without even noticing!

Just like London, the Scottish capital has an abundance of visually beautiful and historically captivating things to take in during leisurely winter walks. Check out Glasgow Live’s guide to the very best walks here. The list includes Pollok Country Park, the city’s largest and a tranquil sanctuary for both visitors and wildlife. If it’s an urban treat you’re after, you can follow Glasgow’s mural trail and take in some breathtakingly good artwork (photos will look brilliant on socials too!).

Wales is well known for its natural wonders and even in urban cities like Cardiff, there’s beauty to behold. This Christmastime, head to Bute Park, where you’ll find a wealth of horticulture and wildlife. Certain features are closed but you can still grab a takeaway hot drink and take in the main sights at this, the green heart of the city.

We wish you all a wonderful holiday and we hope you enjoy whatever walks you take.

Remember to stay safe, wrap up warm and take a hot drink in a flask if there are no cafes or takeaway outlets on offer.

*Always check particular routes/events are still running before heading out*
