The Power of Porridge

Porridge is a great way to start the day, but before you shout ‘BORING!’, believe us, you can dress up these oats into spectacular morning feasts quite easily, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

Firstly, why eat porridge? Erm, where do we start…

Firstly, as it’s a great source of complex carbohydrates, releasing energy slowly, keeping you fuller for longer and less like to reach for an unhealthy treat an hour later.

Also, wait for this, porridge – being a generous source of vitamin A and beta-glutens – can help strengthen your immune system.

Oats are heart-friendly too (lowering high cholesterol) and controlling blood pressure. Meanwhile, the calcium packed into them helps keep your bones strong.

Convinced? Let’s eat!

Here are just some of LK’s favourite porridge-based recipes. Add or subtract ingredients according to your health/weight goals…

Creamy Apple, Cinnamon and Sultana Porridge
This one is rich and rather festive, but it tastes divine! Maybe not one for every morning of the winter, but certainly a fabulous treat if you’ve got a busy day ahead.

PB & J Porridge
If you want to convince the little ones to fall in love with oats, what better way than with added jam and peanut butter? The latter is rich in protein and the jam is, well, just hugely sweet and persuasive.

Baked banana porridge
We enjoyed this healthy combo A LOT and word is, it can shake off the winter blues too! The amino acid tryptophan contained in the bananas helps create the feel-fab hormone serotonin, which the carb-dense oats help the brain absorb more easily. Perfect.

Happy breakfasting!
