The International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in 1989 and the exact distances for different events codified.

Some basic rules apply to all events and usually relate to the barring of any outside help or assistance. There are also strict regulations against interfering with any other athletes, especially on the cycling portion where competitors must maintain space between each other.

The use of any item that could potentially offer an unfair advantage, i.e. fins worn during the swimming event, is also strictly controlled.
