DIVE IN!
Britain has a very deep pool of swimming talent with Olympians such as Rebecca Adlington and Michael Jamieson as well as Paralympic stars including Ellie Simmonds. The sport is one of the most popular Olympic spectator sports and its stars have risen to household names in every corner of the globe. But swimming is also something that anyone can take part in, whether they are on their own or joining a club. It has health benefits beyond the elite level and is known to work all the body’s muscle groups without placing stress on joints. British Swimming aims to get more people in the pool across the nation, helping families and children stay active and providing coaching sessions for future Olympic heroes.
If you’re looking for more than just a solitary dip in the pool a few times a week, swimming clubs offer a training structure, routine and time to practise strokes. Clubs also offer a social environment where you can meet and learn from other swimmers, get coaching advice and even enter competitions. Find the best club for you by going to the Swimming.org website.
The ASA and the Institute of swimming offer a comprehensive programme of courses for everything you could need.
Volunteering at swimming clubs across the country is fun and easy, and without them the sight of British athletes standing victorious on the medal podium would be just a dream. To get involved, start by visiting Swimming.org.
Swimming is not only a thriving competitive sport, but is also considered a basic skill that everyone should have and therefore there are many opportunities to become a coach and contribute to future swimmers. For details on getting started, including courses and funding, check out the ASA website.
