Looking for quick, exciting ways to add variety to your table tennis sessions?

These classic training games – Mini Matches, Round-the-Table, and King of the Table – are perfect for clubs, schools, and social play. They keep players active, improve key skills, and bring a lively, competitive edge without the pressure of full matches.

Mini matches

Small games, big benefits

Short on time? Mini matches are fast-paced games played to 5 or 7 points instead of the usual 11. Perfect for club nights, open sessions, or casual meetups, they help players stay sharp, improve consistency, and enjoy more game time with different opponents.

Great for building confidence and focus – especially for kids and newcomers – they bring a fun, competitive edge without the pressure of a full match.

Round-the-table

Fast, fun, and social

Round-the-table is a lively group game where players hit one shot then run to the back of the opposite queue. Miss a shot and you’re out – until a final two battle it out.

It’s ideal for big groups, helping players develop footwork, quick reactions, and tactical awareness in a high-energy setting. Coaches often use it for warm-ups or cool-downs, and it’s a firm favourite at club nights, junior sessions, and Ping Hubs across the country.

The Royal game

King of the table

A classic table tennis game that blends competition with fun, keeping players engaged while sharpening key skills. Its rotating format maximises playing time, adds intensity without pressure, and mirrors real match demands – players must focus, adapt, and stay consistent under the threat of being dethroned.

Coaches love it for its flexibility: it can be tailored to emphasise serving, spin, footwork or mental toughness.

Variations keep things fresh

  • One-Point King (win in a single rally)
  • Two-Up King (two points needed to dethrone)
  • Service King (only challengers serve)
  • Shot Restriction King (forehands, backhands, or topspin only)
  • For variety, there’s Doubles King, Timed King (hold the table for set minutes) or a Life System (three lives before a new king takes over)

Each twist adds excitement and strategic depth, while promoting resilience, focus and growth in a lively, low-stakes environment. Watch here.
