Mandie Elson, coach at Newark Castle Archers, offers her advice on what kit to get if you want to take your archery to the next level…

The first thing to note is that archery equipment is very individual, and costs can surmount. For that reason, most clubs will offer bow and arrow hire for several months so archers can see how sessions fit in with their lifestyle and if they like the sport.

After that, we recommend buying a finger tab, arm guard, and a finger sling as first steps to personalising your setup.

Of course, this all depends on what route archers follow. The below selections are based on recurve bows. Other common bows are longbows and compounds, but most start with recurve as that is what our Archery GB beginner courses focus on.

A lot of my gear comes from KG Archery in Walesby Nottinghamshire, as they make their own. I can also recommend Merlin Archery in Burton on Trent.

Avalon Classic Finger Tab

A finger tab is a small piece of protective gear worn on the fingers that draw the bowstring. Its main purposes are to protect the fingers, ensure a smoother release, and reduce string wear.

Easton Oval Arm Guard

An arm guard is a protective piece of equipment worn on the inside of the forearm (usually the bow arm). Typically made of leather or plastic, they protect against string slap and keep clothing out of the bowstring’s path.

Avalon Classic Quiver

A quiver is used to hold your arrows, but it’s down to the archer if they wish to buy their own as most clubs will supply ground quivers. Avalon is good for quivers and a good start.

Kinetic Arios Complete Bow

A bow will depend on an archer’s budget. I have an XCR carbon riser with their NX 55 carbon limbs, but that’s expensive. I also have a Hoyt, which is a popular choice, as well as Arios spectra risers with KG Phoenix limbs. My main advice is to choose the riser well, as other components can be upgraded.

Easton XX75 Platinum Plus Fletched Arrow

For arrows I’m using Acc but they have been discontinued. Instead, Easton Tribute arrows and Platinum Plus arrows are good starter picks.
