A specialist programme from the Golf Foundation is helping young people deal with life’s tougher challenges

The Golf Foundation’s Unleash Your Drive programme is redefining personal development in Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) and Alternative Provision (AP) settings, using golf as a vehicle for growth.

Designed specifically for young people facing social, emotional, and mental health challenges, the initiative blends fun, inclusive golf-based activities with proven mental toughness tools.

By introducing skills like resilience, emotional control, positive self-talk and confidence through sport, the programme engages students who may struggle in traditional learning environments.

As Brendon Pyle, CEO of the Golf Foundation, puts it: “Unleash Your Drive is about building life skills through sport in settings where it matters most.”

The Beacon PRU offers a powerful example of its impact. With accessible, video-led training, staff felt confident and consistent in their delivery. Students responded positively – particularly those who were usually disengaged – developing both golf skills and personal growth. “It enabled pupils to feel super professional,” said one staff member, while school leadership praised it for combining physical development with wellbeing and resilience.

Unleash Your Drive is completely free, adaptable for any space, and comes with ready-to-go resources, equipment, and support. It also aligns with frameworks like the PE Life Skills Award and offers tailored impact reporting.

For PRU leaders aiming to support Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs while delivering engaging, meaningful learning experiences, this programme offers a compelling, proven solution.
