Try these five simple drills to improve your game

“Statistically, more people are now playing golf away from the course and using other means such as driving ranges and indoor simulators,” explains Sam Horsfield, LIV tour professional golfer. “Over the last few years the accessibility to play some form of golf has grown so much, you’ve seen this with Trackman as an example, they are adding more and more facilities year-on-year.”

You don’t need a golf course to work on your game. With a little creativity, you can sharpen your skills right at home. Whether you’re focusing on putting, chipping, or perfecting your swing, these simple at-home drills will keep you on top of your game.

01

Perfect your putting with a cup

Got a low-pile carpet or rug? That’s all you need to set up a home putting green! Simply place a cup or any small container on the floor and practice sinking putts. This drill doesn’t require much space – just a few metres will do! Challenge yourself by moving farther away or adding obstacles for extra difficulty.

02

Chipping net for short game mastery

If you want to improve your chipping, invest in a chipping net or set up a DIY target in your garden. No outdoor space? No problem! If you have enough indoor room, practice gentle chips onto a soft surface.

03

Find the sweet spot with impact stickers

Struggling with consistency? Impact stickers are a great way to see exactly where your club is making contact with the ball. These stickers leave a visible mark on your clubface, showing you whether you’re hitting the sweet spot or missing it entirely. Work on adjusting your stance and swing to improve your accuracy.

04

Swing drills for better form

Focusing on swing mechanics is crucial, and you don’t even need a ball to do it! Practice tempo, balance, and rotation with slow, controlled swings. Using a mirror can help you check your posture and alignment.

A fun drill to improve putting stroke consistency is the ‘Penny Drill’. Simply place a coin on the back of your putter and take your stroke. If your motion is smooth and steady, the penny will stay balanced. If it falls off, you’ll know you need to work on your stability.

05

Grip and posture practice

Your grip and posture set the foundation for a great swing. Without even picking up a ball, work on your grip indoors. Try the overlap grip by holding the club in your non-dominant hand, letting the handle rest diagonally across your fingers. Your dominant hand should wrap around just below, with the pinkie finger overlapping slightly. Keep your grip firm but relaxed, allowing for fluid motion in your swing.
