Whether enjoying a casual rally or competing in a local league, tennis blends physical exertion with mental focus

In tennis, the goal (note, there are no ‘goals’ but there is a net) is to hit the ball over the net into your opponent’s court so they can’t return it. You win points when your opponent fails to return the ball within the rules.

Know the court
Some layout essentials:

  • Baseline: Where rallies often begin.
  • Service boxes: Aim your serve here.
  • Doubles alleys: In play only during doubles.
  • Net: Ball must clear this each shot.
Get a grip

Grips matter. Beginners should start with the Eastern grip (like a handshake). As you improve, try the Continental or Semi-Western grips for more variety and spin.

The basic shots for you to get to grips with include:

  • Forehand: Dominant side shot.
  • Backhand: Non-dominant side (one or two hands).
  • Serve: Initiates play, hit diagonally.
  • Volley: Hit near the net before it bounces.
  • Overhead smash: For returning high lobs.

Serve -Stand behind the baseline, toss the ball upward, and hit into the opposite service box. Alternate sides after each point.

Rally and score – After serving, players rally until one breaks the rules or misses. Scoring goes: 15 → 30 → 40 → Game. 0 = Love 40–40 = Deuce. The next point after Deuce = Advantage. But, win two points in a row from deuce to win the game.
