Wicklow may be known for its mountains and fertile fields, but it’s also blessed with a beautiful coastline of long sandy beaches, hidden coves and sheltered harbours. Calm waters create the perfect environment for fun-filled adventures such as diving off rocks, exploring caves by kayak or surfing and balancing on an SUP like a pro. Seals and dolphins regularly pop up to visit.
Getting around
Bray and Wicklow are easily accessed by public transport from Dublin but you need to drive to Brittas Bay.
When to go
Summertime means warmer weather but also school holidays, so it gets very busy on the coast. If you’re not used to swimming in cold water, July and August are best.
Thar she blows
Peak season for wildlife is June to September, with sightings of dolphins and minke whales
Sea kayaking
Suitable for everyone from beginners to seasoned paddlers, sea kayaking with Bray Adventures (brayadventures.ie) is a great way to experience Wicklow’s secret coves. Try a taster session in the safety of Bray Harbour to learn the basics. If the sea is rough, classes are held in the tranquil Dargle River by the harbour. Their expert guides can take you on a wild coastal kayak tour beneath Bray Head, where you’ll meet curious seals and learn about migrating species at the nearby protected bird sanctuary.
