You might not think of the UK as a snowsports nation, but its impact runs deep. Back in 1903, 12 founding members met at London’s Cafe Royal and formed the Ski Club of Great Britain, the world’s first organisation dedicated to helping people learn to ski.
With limited natural snowfall, Britain got creative in the 1960s. Dry ski slopes began to emerge with the development of materials like Dendix, designed to mimic the friction of snow. These synthetic surfaces helped popularise snowsports throughout the UK from Torquay to Sheffield.
Participation in skiing, snowboarding, and freestyle disciplines is on the rise. Thanks to the growth of local clubs, school initiatives, all-weather snow domes, and affordable ski holidays, over 1.2 million people in the UK take part annually in snowsports at home or abroad.
Women have won all five of Team GB’s Winter Olympic golds since 1984. The last man to win gold for Great Britain was Christopher Dean, who won an ice dancing gold alongside Jayne Torvill.
The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina is already galvanising the British snowsports community. Clubs and programmes across the UK are ramping up efforts to develop young talent, expand access, and inspire the next crop of Winter Olympians.
Molly Butler, GB alpine ski racer, advises on the five bits of kit skiers need to take their interest in the sport to the next level.
