Try squash

Wherever you are in the UK there are plenty of ways to pick up a racket, find a court, and get playing a sport that looks set to enjoy a resurgence

Although squash has a reputation as a fast-paced and frantic sport for the ultra fit, there are in fact many different formats and ways to play to suit all ages and abilities.

From the beginner-friendly Squash 101 to Squash 57 (aka racquetball) and everything in-between including Squash Girls Can, Squash Stars, and Mixed Ability Squash, the sport has gone to great efforts to be inclusive.

So whether you’ve never played before, are keen to make a return to a sport you played many years ago, or are a regular player looking for new venues, coaches, or playing partners, the links below should help you find what you’re looking for.

Join a club

There are more than 4,200 courts on which to play squash in England alone, including at leisure centres, colleges, universities and schools

But if you want more than just a court for hire and are keen to immerse yourself in your local squash community, then you should consider joining your local club. There you’ll be able to meet expert coaches, compete against players of a similar skill level, and enjoy the social side of playing squash.

Use the club finder and links below to locate nearby venues where you can pick up a racquet and get involved.

Become a coach

If you’re passionate about squash and want to give something back to the sport you love, you might want to consider becoming a coach

You don’t need to have played at the highest level to make a difference, what matters most is your enthusiasm for the sport, your willingness to learn, and a desire to help others grow.

As well as honing players’ technique and mindset, coaches play a vital role in fostering safe, inclusive, and engaging environments where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy squash. Whether that’s introducing beginners to a court for the first time, supporting juniors in their development, or pushing talented players to reach their potential.

Training pathways offer opportunities to coach at every level in the UK. From local club sessions to schools, community programmes, and performance squads, coaching is your chance to shape the future of a sport that can finally call itself Olympic after many years of waiting.

Sign-up to volunteer

Volunteering is a fantastic way to give back to the squash community and ensure clubs, leagues, and events continue to thrive

There are so many ways to get involved, from joining your club’s committee to help with safeguarding, welfare, or finances, to supporting junior programmes, or assisting with the organisation of competitions and tournaments.

Officiating is another vital part of the game that also needs bolstering. Referees help create fair, safe, and enjoyable environments for players at every level from local leagues to national championships. Becoming an official doesn’t require expert playing ability, just a willingness to learn and develop your knowledge of the rules.

These unsung roles are also a great way to meet like-minded people and enjoy the social side of squash. Training, mentoring, and support are available through national governing bodies for all volunteer and officiating roles.
