Jayne Robinson has been coaching at the world-renowned Pontefract Squash Club for over 15 years and in 2024 she was named the England Squash Coach of the Year

Jayne is passionate about getting as many people into squash as possible, regardless of their age, ability, or gender. Accordingly, she runs women’s groups and mixed ability sessions throughout the week at Pontefract, programmes that have proven increasingly successful in widening the sport’s appeal. Here, she offers tips on the five bits of kit all players need to get started in squash.

Dunlop FX 125 Squash Racket

When it comes to racquets, it has to be a Dunlop. There are many different types of racket to suit needs. I play with a 125g racquet, but there are many different weights and balances.

Shoes are largely down to personal preference, but they must have non-marking soles to protect the court. After that, just make sure they’re comfortable, as foot comfort is really important.

Dunlop Protective Eyewear

Protective eye wear is a must for players under 19. The speed at which the ball can travel can cause injury if you’re not wearing goggles. After the age of 19, it’s down to personal preference as to whether you wish to wear any. Personally, I find Dunlop goggles are the best.

Oliver Lima T-Shirt Red

Like shoes, clothing will come down to personal preferences, and what you feel most comfortable wearing on the court.

Dunlop Pro Duffle Bag

You need something to carry these essential items to the court, and a Dunlop racket bag or duffle bag does the job. Don’t forget to add your squash balls and a towel.
