Food trends to look out for

The explosion of veganism has become one of the biggest food trends in recent times and its momentum shows no sign of slowing. Restaurants and supermarkets are now changing to meet modern demands and we’re seeing more meat alternatives appearing on menus. But veganism isn’t alone, with other food trends set to shakeup the things we eat.

Celebrate wonky
It’s time to ditch those Insta-friendly shots of perfect potatoes and celebrate the ugly. For too long supermarkets were guilty of ditching fruit and veg which didn’t meet aesthetic expectations, contributing towards millions of tonnes of food waste. But thanks to changing attitudes toward what we eat and the efforts of the big supermarkets such as Morrison’s ‘wonky veg’ range. less food is being binned.

And ‘ugly’ produce doesn’t have to stop at fruit and veg either with wonky meat now on sale too. Last year Muscle foods started to sell its wonky steaks. Neglected by restaurants and supermarkets because of their odd sizes, they’re usually destined to end up as mincemeat.  But due to changing perceptions of what we eat they’re now being given a new lease of life, offering customer’s premium quality meat for less than half the cost.

Vegetable’s rising stars
Shunning animal products and by-products is now more mainstream than ever meaning it’s times for some of those forgotten vegetable stars to step into the spotlight. One of those is cabbage which is hotly tipped to be the next kale. Available in multiple varieties to offer different shapes and colours, cabbage chips and enchiladas could soon be a regular on the menu. It also goes hand in hand with the rise of gut-friendly eating and joins other rising stars such as jackfruit and mushrooms which are taking centre stage as the main no-meat ingredient.

Drink up
It’s not just what we eat that’s changing with a number of products offering different ways of keeping you hydrated. Low alcohol beers have now been joined by the world’s first distilled non-alcohol spirit in the shape of Seedlip, offering an alternative to gin minus the hangover. H20 is also undergoing a makeover with a bottle of maple water, which contains less than half the sugar of coconut water and is great for skin revitalisation, one of the many alternatives. The popularity of Oatmilk is also on the rise as the go- to non-dairy alternative. High in protein and low in fat it could soon be making an appearance in your cup of joe.
