The hearts behind the game

Meet the unsung heroes who keep grassroots football alive

Volunteers are the heart and soul of grassroots football with around 860,000 people supporting and growing the game they love. Volunteers like Aisha Siddique, Lorraine Humm, and Callum Huckfield are crucial to the game’s growth, building lasting impacts on young players and the sport while fostering community growth through dedication and passion.

"My favourite part is seeing kids develop, not just on the football field, but as people," says Aisha Siddique, Winner of Young Volunteer of the Year at The Grassroots Awards 2024. Aisha’s passion for inclusivity drives her work at Alpha United, where she connects with young players, launching initiatives on anti-racism and nitrous oxide misuse. Her role goes beyond football, nurturing character development and personal growth.

Football at the centre
That commitment to community impact resonates with Lorraine Humm of Kent FA. "You get more than you put in from the kids and adults," she says. "Football is at the centre of so many good relationships and memories." Lorraine has built an inclusive environment at Maidstone FC, running the disability section for over 200 players.

As the Keeping Football Positive Award recipient, Lorraine does everything from coaching and fundraising to organizing food banks and kit recycling. Her contributions ensure that Maidstone FC is a hub of support, helping all players thrive.

Callum Huckfield, Coach of the Year for Disability Pathway, also focuses on developing young adults. "I want to have a positive impact on young people’s lives," Callum says, as he empowers players with SEND and neurodiverse barriers to enjoy football.

Each week, Callum runs exciting, accessible sessions for over 40 players, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the game. His coaching extends to running football camps, offering opportunities for players with disabilities to experience the game.

Individually, Aisha, Lorraine, and Callum apply football as a force for good in their local communities. Together their stories show how grassroots volunteers build more than just teams – they build communities, foster growth, and create a lasting legacy.
