How grassroots coaches shape players on and off the pitch

Beyond tactics and skills, coaches help develop players both on and off the pitch, instilling values that last a lifetime. England Football’s Respect Campaign isn’t just earned during the game. As one grassroots coach, Vicky Fisher, explains: "When we talk about Respect, we are talking about the positive environment we want to encourage across all of football."

Creating a positive environment is key to helping players thrive. Research shows that 90% of young players play better with positive encouragement. And that begins with the coach. "My coach didn’t only build me as a player – he built me as a person," England star Marcus Rashford explains. Similarly, Esme Morgan fondly recalls her coach’s "infectiously positive and enthusiastic" attitude, which played a huge role in her development.

Game changing impact
The impact of grassroots coaching is felt beyond the technical side of the game. Coaches are instrumental in fostering respect, perseverance, and teamwork. "My first coach taught me more than just football,” reveals Arsenal and England’s Bukayo Saka. “He instilled in me the values of hard work, respect, and perseverance. He was like a second father to me."

By focusing on the bigger picture, coaches help young athletes succeed both in football and in life.

As a coach you use these principles to create a positive football environment - encouraging players to treat others with respect, embrace inclusivity, and prioritize safety. As a player, by adhering to these standards, you work with your coach to create a supportive atmosphere where everyone enjoys the sport they love.

Grassroots coaches can foster not only better footballers but also better people. As Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa points out, "You learn a lot from your elders," highlighting the lasting influence that supportive coaching can have on a young player’s journey both on and off the field. Encouraging and supportive coaching has a profound impact on young footballers, shaping their confidence, character, and sense of respect.
