Move together
Four fun, free ways to get active and make new friends this winter
parkrun
Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, parkrun is a free, weekly community event that allows you to walk, jog or run 5K in your local outdoor space at your own pace – before enjoying a cuppa and a chat. Tail walkers ensure no one ever comes “last” and volunteers often lead run/walk or “Jeffing” groups around the course – a great way to get started if you’re worried about running out of puff.
Walk with a Doc
Prefer a slightly slower pace? Walk with a Doc is a free community walking program. Led by local doctors and healthcare providers, it’s a fun, safe way to get your steps in, learn more about health and meet new friends. Walks take place on a weekly or monthly basis and begin with a short guided discussion on a health-related topic.
Let’s Ride
Dust off your pedals, pump up those tyres and join a local guided bike ride or community cycling group . Breeze offers women-only rides for all levels, while British Cycling’s inclusive club programme, Limitless, provides cycling opportunities for disabled people of all ages and experience levels.
Outdoor Swimming Society
Cold water swimmers love the sport for the sense of community and camaraderie that comes with it, as well as its benefits for mental and physical health. For many, a Christmas Day swim is a communal ritual. So what are you waiting for? Grab a wetsuit and test the waters at your friendly local swimming group.
Kitbag essentials
1/Wet weather gear
A light, breathable waterproof is essential for walkers, runners and cyclists. Decathlon has a functional, affordable range.
2/Puncture repair kit
It’s good practice to carry your own puncture repair kit – and know how to use it. The Halfords Puncture Repair Kit can be used up to 6 times.
3/Thermal robe
Swimming al fresco? A cosy changing robe is a must. The KitBrix Poncho doubles up as a toasty waterproof coat.
4/On-the-spot relief
Bit sore? Deep Relief Anti-Inflammatory Gel provides powerful pain and inflammation relief for strains, sprains and sports injuries. Deep Relief Actiflex Patch offers cooling, soothing relief for achey joints.
The Deep Relief range is available from most high street community pharmacies, grocery stores nationwide and Amazon.
