Weapons: You will have to decide between the foil, epee and sabre, and also decide on the grip you would prefer. Try them out at a club and find the best fit before buying.

Jacket: Fencing jackets cover the torso for full protection and must be made to zip for the right or left-handed wearer.

Underarm protectors: Also called plasterons, these give protection to the most commonly hit area of the body and are worn on the sword arm.

Gloves: Gloves are usually only worn on the sword hand and for competition use, the sabre requires a glove with a conducive cuff.

Mask: A fencing mask will include the mesh visor as well as protection for the sides of the head and a bib over the neck. Masks are different for each weapon.
