There are many different disciplines in athletics that come under the umbrellas of running, jumping, throwing and walking.
Running: Distances range from 60m sprints to 10,000m endurance events. Some events involve athletes overcoming obstacles such as hurdles.
Throwing: There are four throwing events for men and women: Shot put, javelin, discus and hammer.
Jumping: Pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump make up the jumping events for men and women.
Walking: Race walking covers a range of distances from one mile race walks to 50km events.
