A good coach or club is a must. It’s a sport with a high risk of injury so the right training is vital. A club should provide safe equipment and qualified coaches.
Clothing: In competition, women wear leotards and men wear a leotard-type singlet with shorts or leggings. For practice, and when you’re just starting out, any comfortable, fitted clothing, like leggings and a vest will suffice.

Shoes: Shoes are a matter of choice. For beam work in artistic gymnastics, some gymnasts wear specialist shoes to cushion their feet on landing, whilst others prefer not to so they can get a better grip.
