If you’re looking to really push yourself and get every inch of your body (inside and out) super-fit, taking part in a triathlon ticks all the boxes, and then some. Triathlon is a race of three continuous events, usually swimming, cycling and running. Training for a triathlon will keep your weekly workout schedule dynamic and varied. It mixes high impact with low impact, endurance with explosive power. Mixing regular swimming with running and cycling means that you work out different muscles than the average track athlete or cyclist – allowing your body to be more protected against high-impact sports injuries. It’s a sport that makes you an all-rounder in every sense of the word.

But when it comes to competition, there is so much more to things than simply being the fastest in all of the three disciplines. The transition – i.e. the change over from one event to another – is sometimes called the ‘fourth discipline’… little wonder, the speed and agility with which you switch could mean the difference between winning and losing. On top of that, triathletes at the highest level need the endurance of a marathon runner and also need to abide by rules in transition and passing. The distances swum, cycled and run vary from event to event, meaning that there are even short races suited to beginners.
