Olympic weightlifting is a sport that requires strength, power and great flexibility. Athletes are judged on the amount of weight they can lift but much of their success depends on how technically capable they are as well as their power and strength. Athletes may enjoy weightlifting as a sport in its own right, or use it as training for other sports. Olympic-style weightlifting is particularly beneficial for power sports such as rugby, rowing and gymnastics but it is also beneficial in developing core strength and injury prevention in any sport.

These competitions also tests explosive strength as opposed to the limits of strength. There are many other variants of strength contests all over the world that measure strength in other ways, but the Olympic version sticks to rules that not only help contest strength between opponents fairly, but also maintains safety for all athletes involved.

Weightlifting is related to one of the oldest forms of sporting yet the practice itself is actually more popular with athletes in other sports than as a club sport in itself. However, those who do enter the sport find a sport that not only involves a direct competition of power, but is also technically challenging.
